San Diego Surfing Academy LLC founder, owner and head coach, Pat Weber, caught his first wave in the summer of 1966 in Florida, with the support and encouragement of his father’s coaching and teaching associates at Cocoa Beach High School. A lover of all sports, Pat especially took to the water and surfing. He set aside a successful competitive surfing career with the Eastern Surfing Association and as a rider for Quiet Flight Surfboards to complete a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Florida in 1982. Go Gators!
The allure of consistent surf beckoned him to California where he resumed a competitive career in longboard and tandem surfing, winning titles for Swamis Surfing Association and earning the distinction of Western Surfing Association points leader champion for the 1989-1990 season. The highlight of his contest resume’ was an international win against a stacked field in Ensenada, Mexico, at Ricardo Dominguez’ Annual San Miguel Contest. Giving credit for the inspiration to the original Waikiki Beach Boys, the Paskowitz Family Surf Camp and Ed Guzman’s Club Ed of Santa Cruz, Coach Pat has been teaching surfing, hosting surf camps and guiding domestic/international surf trips full-time since June of 1995.
In September of 2015, Coach Pat mentored blind athlete, Scott Leason, the first-ever sight impaired surfer for Team USA in the first-ever International Surfing Association World Adaptive Games in La Jolla, California. In June of 2016, Leason qualified for Team USA by winning the Visually Impaired Division on verbal cues alone by Coach Pat at the USA Surfing Championships in Oceanside, California. Working as a team again, Leason repeated as US Champ in 2017 and took second at the Duke’s Oceanfest in Waikiki beating the current world champion twice.
Since late 2016, Coach Pat has worked as a Substitute Teacher in three north San Diego County school districts and is coming down the home stretch for a Teacher Credential in Social Science and a Masters Degree in Education from National University. He has been invited to apply for a full scholarship at NU. In addition to coaching and teaching, Coach Pat works as a professional photographer for MarathonFoto and Grad Images, divisions of the Iconic group.

Coach Pat is ably assisted by his wife, Lori Hoffman Weber, an Emergency Room Registered Nurse at Tri-City Hospital and the SDSA Staff Photographer. They like to say, “It’s better to know her and not need her than to need her and not know her!” Not that it’s ever an issue because the San Diego Surfing Academy LLC boasts an impeccable safety record!
