2017 08 19 US Sight Impaired Champ, Scott Leason, Takes Silver at Dukes

Honolulu, HI — August 21, 2017 — First-ever and two-time US Sight Impaired Surfing Champ, Scott Leason, took the Silver Medal in the Mixed Division of the AccesSurf Hawaii Championships held as part of the Duke’s Oceanfest. The contest for adaptive surfers was held at Queens surf break at famous Waikiki and the south shore of Oahu. This was the first year blind surfers competed, fielding athletes from Australia, Spain and the USA. In taking second place, Leason twice bested the scores of World Champ, Aitor Francena of Spain, for a personal best finish in international competition. Matt Formston of Australia won the Mixed Division with a consistent display of surfing prowess and earned a berth in the Super Heat. All blind surfers operated as a team with sighted coaches who offered verbal cues alone to their athletes. Leason’s eyes in the water belong to Coach Pat Weber of the San Diego Surfing Academy. The pair have surfed together since 2001.
